One-inch hail is large enough to damage asphalt shingles. From your driveway, a hail-damaged roof and an undamaged roof look identical.
What we check, and why
Field shingles
We look for circular impact marks where the granule layer has been displaced, and we check whether the mat beneath has been bruised. A bruised mat feels soft under thumb pressure — it is a tactile finding as much as a visual one.
Soft metals
Gutters, downspouts, vent caps, AC condenser fins and roof flashing dent more readily than shingles. Denting on soft metals is strong corroborating evidence that hail of a damaging size fell on the property.
Gutters and downspouts
A layer of granules at the bottom of a downspout after a storm tells you the shingle surface lost material. It is one of the more reliable indicators available.
Ridge and hip
Ridge caps take a disproportionate share of impacts because of their exposure and angle. Damage often concentrates here first.
Penetrations and flashing
Pipe boots crack, vent housings dent, and flashing shifts. Each of these is a water entry point that will not announce itself until the next driving rain.
Attic and interior
Where access allows, we check the underside of the deck for daylight, moisture staining and prior repairs.

One inch — roughly a quarter — is a commonly cited threshold for damage to asphalt shingles, though the age and condition of the roof, the wind direction and the hail’s density all affect the outcome. Smaller hail can damage an older, brittle roof.
Often, approximately. Fresh impacts expose asphalt that has not yet weathered, and the exposed mat darkens over time. This matters because carriers generally cover damage from a specific dated event.
Yes, where the roof is unsafe or impractical to walk. Drone assessment supplements a physical inspection — it does not fully replace one, because bruising is partly a tactile finding.
Please don’t. Beyond the fall risk, walking an asphalt roof in Texas heat can itself scuff granules and damage shingles. That is what the free inspection is for.
